Every 16 July, Mallorca’s fishing communities honour the Virgin of Carmen patron saint of sailors with one of the island’s most visually stunning traditions. Dozens of boats adorned with flowers, flags and banners set sail in convoy from harbours across the island, carrying a statue of the Virgin out to sea. Flowers are cast onto the water in memory of those lost at sea. Then the celebrations begin.
Best locations: Port de Pollenca (large flotilla, sea blessing, fireworks), Port de Soller (electricity cut around the bay, boats lit by flares. extraordinary), Cala Figuera (intimate and deeply authentic), Port Andratx (multi-day programme with live music and fireworks). Mass at around 8pm, procession follows. Free everywhere.
